Prolonged Dallas Heat Wave Started on This Date in 1980
Today marks the anniversary of when a prolonged heat wave got underway in Dallas, Texas, in 1980.
Temperatures soared to 104 degrees on this date in 1980, then continued to crack the century mark every day until August 4th. Numerous record highs were set during this time. Many of those record highs have yet to be broken, including the stretch of record that spans from today to July 3rd.
Dallas also experienced its all-time June record high during this heat wave. Temperatures soared to 113 degrees on both June 26th and 27th.
The entire Southwest had to endure this blazing heat wave during the summer of 1980. The heat was blamed on the deaths of over 1,200 people.
