May-like warmth to build across the Northeast through Saturday

By Faith Eherts, AccuWeather meteorologist

After a chilly start to the week, a surge of warm air has finally moved into the midwestern and northeastern United States.

"Southwesterly winds have replaced chilly air from Canada with milder air from the southern U.S., and that will continue through Saturday," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Steve Travis.

Warmup NE

For many locations, temperatures will be above average for the first time in weeks.

There can be a brief drop in temperatures across interior areas on Friday as spotty showers drift through the region.

The warmup is expected to intensify early in the weekend, with a persistent southerly breeze expected to pick up. This will usher in weather more normal for May by Saturday, with temperatures reaching into the 60s F as far north as the Green Mountains of Vermont.

Temperatures will soar to 15 to 25 degrees above average, but most will still fall short of record levels. The warmth will be comparable to that of mid-March, when even Boston got into the mid-60s F.

"Some places could reach into the 70s F for the first time this year on Saturday," Travis said.

Saturday East

New York City, Allentown and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, could record their second 70-degree day of the year.

Unfortunately, the weekend warmth will be overshadowed by increasingly cloudy weather ahead of an approaching batch of rain.

"Chillier air will return in many places for Sunday and Monday as a front moves through the region again," Travis warned.
