Severe thunderstorms will continue to target the High Plains, Upper Midwest through midweek

Thunderstorms in the early morning of July 8 gave residents of Graceville, Minnesota, a light show that illuminated the night sky.

The threat for severe weather is set to continue across the High Plains and Upper Midwest through midweek across many areas that have already had to deal with daily severe thunderstorm activity.

Across the Dakotas, reports of damaging wind gusts or large hail have been reported from July 2-7. The most recent severe outbreak brought damaging wind gusts in parts of Montana, as well as large hail and even one tornado during Tuesday.

The storms charged through North Dakota on Tuesday night and northwestern Minnesota early Wednesday morning, unleashing similar damaging impacts.

A wind gust of 89 mph was clocked in Malta, Montana, late Tuesday afternoon as a line of intense storms swept through the town. A few other spots also reported wind gusts over 80 mph associated with the same line of storms.

In the wake of Tuesday's thunderstorm activity, the same storm system responsible for the thunderstorm activity is expected to spark potentially dangerous thunderstorms at midweek.

The threat into Wednesday night will shift eastward into the Midwest and central Plains, bringing an end to the threat across Montana and most of the Dakotas.

Residents in the Twin Cites of Minnesota, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Omaha, Nebraska, will be under the gun for severe weather into Wednesday night. The severe risk could extend as far south as Wichita, Kansas, early Thursday morning.

These thunderstorms will likely pose similar threats compared to the activity from Tuesday across the High Plains, with large hail, damaging wind gusts and an isolated tornado all possible across this zone.

Unfortunately for those hoping for a drier stretch of weather during the latter half of the week, an active stretch of weather may continue across portions of the Plains and Midwest.

A large dome of high pressure setting up shop across the Southwest will act to steer storm systems across the same general area into late week.
