Robust storms threaten flooding, strong winds over India and Bangladesh

By Maura Kelly, AccuWeather meteorologist

Lightning scattered across the skies over Mackay, Queensland, on April 19, as storms pushed through the region.

Rounds of thunderstorms will bring a break from the heat across parts of India and Bangladesh this week, but they will also increase the risk for flash flooding.

A series of storms tracking across northern India will bring unsettled weather to parts of the region in the coming days.

AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Houk notes that, "Kolkata, which had a hot, dry first half of the month has picked up showers and thunderstorms in recent days. They will be in the risk area for daily downpours the rest of the week, with the clouds and rain keeping temperatures in check."

While scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across the Himalayan Mountains into the middle of the week, AccuWeather meteorologists will be focusing on northeastern India and Bangladesh.

Increased moisture across this area from the Bay of Bengal will help to fuel stronger thunderstorms. A persistent passage of storms will keep unsettled conditions over the area each day this week.

"Thunderstorms are expected to be the strongest from the afternoon into the early nighttime hours," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Adam Douty.

"The greatest threats from these storms will be frequent lightning, torrential downpours and strong, potentially damaging wind gusts," added Douty. "However, large and damaging hail may accompany some of the strongest storms."

Rounds of downpours across northeastern India and Bangladesh can increase the risk for flooding throughout the week.

Houk warns that, "Showers and storms will likely continue across this area right through the weekend and can produce 150-300 mm (6-12 inches) of rain in many areas. An AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 500 mm (20 inches) is possible in the Hills of northeast India."

Flooding will be most likely in areas that receive repeat downpours or extended periods of rain.

Mudslides will be possible in the mountainous terrain as well.

The wet pattern will help to clear the air of any pollution in the region and improve air quality. However, the air quality has been at its best in decades as lockdowns due to the coronavirus reduce activity across the country.

In southern India, moisture will be increasing into the weekend. This can bring showers and thunderstorms into Tamil Nadu, close to the city of Chennai, this weekend.

Elsewhere across India, hot and dry conditions are forecast to continue through at least this week. Residents will be looking toward the start of the southwest monsoon season for a break from the heat.
