How to properly dress for cold weather

By Staff, AccuWeather

Copied

You can be comfortable, sensible, and fashionable while you prepare to brave the elements.

Staying warm while outside can keep you comfortable and from getting sick. It is important for you to know which types of warm clothing you should invest in, and how you should go about getting dressed as you are about to head out into the cold outdoors.

Layer Up to Get Maximum Protection from the Elements

Find a base layer of clothing that you can put on that will feel comfortable against your body and offer you some warmth. Add a layer over that one that will provide you with a little more protection from the elements. You want to put on a waterproof coat, and that will cut the wind when it is blowing. You might consider putting on ski pants, as well, if you are going to be spending time in the snow.

Know How Cold It is Going to Be

Before you start to get ready to head outside, you need to know how warm or cold it is going to be. You should check the local weather forecast so that you will have an idea of the kind of weather to expect. Pay attention to the projected wind speed and whether or not it is supposed to be sunny outside.

Cover Every Body Part

When you are getting dressed, and you are trying to make sure that you are going to stay warm outside, be sure that you are covering your ears, hands, and neck. Look for a hat that comes down well over your ears, and is made of a material that will keep you warm. Look for gloves that will allow you to have the mobility that you want and need, but that will still keep your hands feeling warm.

Wear Waterproof Boots to Keep Feet Dry and Warm

If you get wet, you are going to feel cold much more quickly than if you manage to stay dry the whole time that you are outside. Look for boots that are made of waterproof material. There are products that you can purchase that can be put on your boots to help change ordinary boots into waterproof boots. Do what you can to keep your feet dry, and put on a thick pair of socks under your boots.

Consider Heated Jackets and Other Heated Items

Some jackets have a battery-operated heat source built into them. Consider investing in one of those jackets if you are going to be spending a lot of time outside in cold weather. There are also small packets that are made for inside pockets, gloves, and shoes, and that can offer you a bit of heat when you are outside in the cold.
