Best time and places to visit in the Bahamas

Published Feb 8, 2020 2:45 PM EDT

Copied

This terrifying might look like a scene straight out of the film Sharknado but it is actually the moment divers got trapped in a spiraling swarm of 80 sharks. Engineer Troy Iloski, 50, was exploring shipwrecks on a Bahamas seabed when dozens of the beady-eyed predators started circling.

Featuring stunning beaches, a friendly vibe, tropical temperatures, and world-class outdoor recreational activities, the Bahama Islands are the quintessential Caribbean destination. You will be swept away by the magic of these islands from the minute that you step foot on the warm, sugar-like sand. Here are six of the best things to consider doing when visiting this tropical paradise.

Lucayan National Park - Grand Bahama Island

Although three national parks call Grand Bahama Island home, this one is the clear favorite. The 40-acre park features clusters of mangrove and palm trees, as well as the gorgeous Gold Rock Beach. The underwater limestone caves beckon divers to come and explore the treasures of the water. An elevated boardwalk along the beach is a great place to enjoy a stroll. If you're "beaching it" during your trip, be sure to take sunscreen as the UV indices can be very high.

Atlantis - Paradise Island

The iconic Atlantis Resort is a must-see when visiting the Bahamas. Even if you do not have reservations at one of the hotels of the complex, you can purchase a day pass to enjoy the many amenities and activities at the resort. The highlight of a trip to Atlantis is the 141-acre water park, featuring 11 swimming pools, a lazy river, and eight waterslides. Guests can also get up close and personal with the open-air marine habitat featuring sharks, eels, piranhas, and more. If the blazing heat drives you indoors, Atlantis also boasts multiple dining options, a casino, and a golf course, making it your one-stop-shop for fun.

Port Lucaya Marketplace - Grand Bahama Island

Shopping enthusiasts will delight in all of the offerings of this open-air Marketplace. The Marketplace features two straw markets, a myriad of duty-free shops, and handcrafted delights that fill the stalls with loads of souvenir options. Be sure to sample the famous coconut and fruit daiquiris while you nibble on conch from Daddy Brown's Conch and Seafood Stand. It is best to visit the markets in the morning before the temperatures get too hot.

Ardastra Gardens, Zoo & Conservation Centre - New Providence Island

Although it can be challenging to decide which is the best island in the Bahamas, it is clear that New Providence leads the pack with tourist attractions. The Ardastra Gardens, Zoo & Conservation Centre is the only zoo on the islands. This facility boasts over four acres of lush gardens and animal exhibits. Visitors will appreciate the chance to hand-feed the colorful parrots and gaze at the marching flamingos. With over 135 animals living in their natural habitat, it is easy to see why so many people fall in love with this unique destination.

Queen's Staircase - New Providence Island

This historic staircase was carved from limestone by over 600 slaves in the late 1700s, taking over 16 years to complete. The 66 steps bear the name of Queen Victoria, the Brit responsible for abolishing slavery on the islands. The importance of this staircase to the history of the Bahamas cannot be disputed, making it deserving of a stop while sightseeing on the islands. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes if you plan on climbing the stairs.

Cable Beach - New Providence Island

There is no shortage of amazing beaches in the Bahamas, making it difficult to choose just one. If you do not have access to one of the fabulous private beaches that dot the landscape of this Caribbean oasis, be sure to check out Cable Beach on New Providence Island. This beach is conveniently located just six miles west of downtown Nassau and can be reached by the number 10 bus from George Street. You can choose to rent a jet ski, splash in the gentle waves, or lay on the beach and soak up the sun. Remember to bring along a floppy hat and sunscreen to block damaging UV rays.

Best Time to Visit the Bahamas

While this island chain enjoys warm weather all year long, you might want to avoid the rainy season if you want bright and sunny skies for your trip. The rainy season picks up in May and continues through October. The islands are in the middle of the hurricane belt, meaning that you run the risk of severe weather if you plan your trip for hurricane season. In the Atlantic Ocean, this season runs June through November, with the most significant threat in August and September.

Although it is impossible to pinpoint the best month to visit the Bahamas, many travelers swear by December through April as the most beautiful time to visit. Be aware that this peak season brings more crowds and higher prices along with all that sun and warmth. Be sure to check the weather forecast beforehand so you know what to expect and how to pack.
