Quantifying Record Cold in Northeast
I reported earlier this week on how unusual the cold morning temperatures were in the Northeast. Today I report again on extreme cold this morning... and it may be worse tonight in some areas. The lowest temperatures this morning at 5 AM were found in several pools of cold air where winds were calm.

Local cold temperatures (F) this morning here in Central Pennsylvania:
- Rock Springs (KPSU): -6
- East of Bellefonte (Forecaster Dave D's House): -1
- State College (Action Steve Penstone's Car): 0
- State College (Forecaster Dan K.'s House): 1.8

- State College (My House): +3.2
The local airport only recorded +10.4.
Saranac Lake, NY only dipped to 1 degree today but we are forecasting -37 there tonight. We think Rochester, NY will dip to 0 tonight; they have only been at or below 0 degrees 10 times in history on March 9th or later, with the all-time record at -5.

The data from AccuWeather.com indicates that they got down to 4 degrees; if that is true it would have broken their all-time March record low temperature for March! It's likely more records will be broken tonight. Stay tuned for a full report by this weekend.
The combination of clear skies, snow cover and the presence of a frigid dome of high pressure will allow temperatures to plummet to near or below current record lows across the interior of New England and the Interstate 95 corridor from Portland, Maine, to Washington, D.C., tonight...
