May Atlantic Tropical Storms Map

By Jesse Ferrell, AccuWeather meteorologist

Published May 18, 2009 9:13 AM EDT | Updated May 19, 2009 12:49 PM EDT

UPDATE: We have created a map based loosely on this data (not just May, all pre-season).

When I blogged about Subtropical Storm Andrea in May 2007 (a similar storm in a similar area to the potential storm this week), I posted a list of all Atlantic (Sub)Tropical storms occurring "out of season." I would like to repeat that below, along with a map showing all May storms (excluding "Subtropical Storm 1" in 1976 which I didn't have a track for. Interesting enough, it was the only storm that originated in the Gulf - near the purple "X" then moved northeastward across Florida ending at the "X" in the Atlantic).

For information on this week's storm potential, please monitor our Headlines (shown at right), Breaking Weather News Page (PREMIUM | PRO), and our Hurricane Center (PREMIUM | PRO).

So before you hear the media hyping this week's (sub)tropical storm formation as "historical" - remember it just happened two years ago. The Subtropical Storm Andrea (2007) track below is from our Interactive Google Hurricane Tracker; the satellite shot is courtesy SSEC from my blog entry.
