Tire Dump Fire in Kuwait
Fears of "environmental catastrophe" have been raised in Kuwait, where millions of tires began burning on Tuesday.
Kuwaiti lawmakers were likely to hold a special session to address the matter, the Gulf News website said on Tuesday.
The blaze kindled in the roughly 5 million used tires stored in a dump in Al Jahra Tuesday.
Hundreds of fire fighters, supported by the military and the Kuwait Oil company, were tackling the fire, according to the Kuwait News Agency.
Satellite imaged posted on NASA's Earth Observatory website showed the cloud, made dark by the sooty flames.
Winds were blowing the smoke mostly eastward, over the Mideast Gulf a little north of Kuwait City.
A shift to northwesterly wind on Wednesday shifted the smoke trajectory west and south of the city, which houses most of the nation's people.
