More rain to target Germany this weekend following deadly Storm Xavier

By Kristina Pydynowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist & Eric Leister, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Storm Xavier swept across parts of northern Germany on October 5, killing at least seven people. This video shows the moment the wind ripped the roof off a building in Schwedt, Germany.

After Storm Xavier downed trees and left several people dead across northern Germany on Thursday, an end to the wet stretch of weather across Germany will not come before Monday.

Xavier produced wind gusts of 80-96 km/h (50-60 mph) from Bremen and Hamburg to Dresden on Thursday. Berlin was blasted with gusts to minimal hurricane force (120 km/h or 75 mph).

At least seven people are dead, five of whom were killed in their vehicles, according to The Local. Among the dead was a woman who was struck by a falling tree in Berlin.

Downed trees on train and tram lines severely impacted northern Germany's public transportation system.

Deutsche Bahn reports railways will likely continue to be affected through the weekend. Many long-distance routes are currently blocked in both directions. This includes the routes from the capital to Hanover and Hamburg.

There were nearly 100 flight delays at Berlin Schönefeld Airport, according to FlightAware.

Residents will still not be able to put away their umbrellas this weekend as another cold front will arrive and produce more rainy weather.

While a cool breeze will accompany the rain, especially across the north, a repeat of Xavier's winds across northern Germany is not expected this weekend.

Peak gusts should generally be on the order of 50-55 km/h (30-35 mph).

The rain still threatens to interfere with outdoor plans and create slower travel.

Temperatures will be largely held below normal both days with highs in the lower teens C (50s F) expected. Highs closer to 16 C (60 F) are more common this time of year.

Germany 10/7

Most of the rain will press into northern and central Germany through Saturday night before dropping into southern areas at night and into Sunday. However, showers will both precede and follow the steadiest rain.

Any plans postponed on Saturday across northern Germany will be able to be completed on Sunday as drier air filters in and some sunshine returns.

Following largely dry weather across Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg on Saturday, rain will dampen outdoor plans on Sunday.

A few showers will persist into Monday and necessitate some residents to keep umbrellas handy. The most numerous of these showers are likely to be toward the Alps.

However, Germany as a whole will be much drier when compared to the weekend.

That will not be the theme for Tuesday as yet another bout of rain and gusty winds is expected.
