Gusty storms to rumble across eastern US coast on Wednesday
The same system that unleashed the largest severe weather outbreak so far this year will trigger one more round of feisty thunderstorms along the Atlantic Seaboard on Wednesday.
Over 300 incidents of severe weather occurred on Tuesday and Tuesday night from Indiana and Ohio to Texas and Louisiana, according to data compiled by the National Weather Service.
While the severe threat at midweek is not expected to be as extensive, residents along the Interstate-95 corridor from the upper mid-Atlantic coast to the southern Atlantic Seaboard should not let their guard down.
A narrow line of showers and thunderstorms will stretch from New Jersey to the Carolinas and Florida Panhandle during the midday and early afternoon hours of Wednesday.
A handful of the storms along this line have the potential to turn severe, containing strong winds capable of snapping tree branches, downing power lines, hail, downpours and frequent lightning.
The Delmarva Peninsula, Virginia’s Tidewater region and eastern North Carolina, including the Outer Banks, will be at greatest risk of these heavy to locally severe storms.
This includes Ocean City and Salisbury, Maryland; Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Virginia; Dover, Delaware; and Elizabeth City, Corolla and Nags Head, North Carolina.
While the threat for a tornado will be much lower than that of Tuesday, a brief spin up or two cannot be ruled out.
The strongest thunderstorms are likely to develop near or just east of Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia.
Even in the absence of thunderstorms, gusty winds in the wake of the system threaten to trigger damage across a portion of the Northeast into Saturday evening.
Motorists will not have to worry about the storms impacting their commute home as the wet weather will sweep out of the I-95 corridor and mainly offshore by late afternoon and evening.
Thursday will offer great weather for any necessary tree removal or power restoration from this week’s storms, with sunshine, seasonable temperatures and low humidity expected across the South.
However, residents will not want to delay cleanup efforts.
A new storm may bring heavy rainfall and the potential for severe thunderstorms across the Southern states late this week and into the weekend.
