Latest Innovation from Global Weather and Digital Media Leader is Engineered for Clarity and Communication
AccuWeather Global Weather Center, October 18, 2019 — Adding a new level of detail to its commitment to Superior Accuracy, AccuWeather today announced the introduction of a typeface designed exclusively for AccuWeather. The new user-centric typeface, called “Solis,” which comes from the Latin meaning “sun,” is engineered for clarity and will be utilized across all AccuWeather properties and branded materials to better and more clearly communicate weather forecasts, news and information.
More and more technology companies are developing custom fonts to better represent their brands, as well as provide for an enhanced, and unified, user experience. Solis’ design was inspired by the angles of AccuWeather’s iconic AccuWeather sun logo along with the priority of having the greatest level of clarity for the purpose of communicating weather forecasts and information for the protection of life and property. AccuWeather partnered with the globally renowned design agency LoyalKaspar in New York to create Solis and other innovative design elements in collaboration with AccuWeather’s design team.
Said Global Chief Product Officer Kurt Fulepp, “We are extremely pleased with the results of our new brand refresh, particularly the launch of Solis. Creating a custom typeface that further enhances the visual beauty, as well as information clarity, of our product portfolio that reaches nearly 2 billion people globally is bound to make an impact. Our users rely on AccuWeather for our highly accurate and hyper local weather forecasts as well as to understand the potential impact of severe weather; Solis and all elements of the refresh were developed with that responsibility to our users in mind.”

AccuWeather's proprietary font, Solis, has been designed to promote clarity, and reflects the detail built into every aspect of innovation at AccuWeather.
With the introduction of its proprietary typeface, AccuWeather is joining the ranks of other growing technology companies and recognized global brands, such as Airbnb, Apple, Google, Samsung, Netflix, Uber and YouTube, and many others. The commitment to a well-executed typeface as an extension of corporate branding demonstrates that increasingly, companies understand the visual aspect of communications can serve a functional and strategic, as well as an aesthetic purpose.
“The unchallenged Superior Accuracy of AccuWeather forecasts and warnings has been proven time and time again,” said Dr. Joel Myers, AccuWeather Founder and CEO. “The greater the accuracy of weather forecasts and warnings, the better decisions people and businesses can make to plan in the face of hazardous weather events. And, the more lives are saved, the more property is protected, and the more losses are reduced. Over and above our well-documented Superior Accuracy, however, weather forecasts have little value if they are not communicated in the most effective way possible for the greatest levels of clarity. This commitment to detail is built into every aspect of our innovation at AccuWeather – right down to our font.”
Solis is currently available in multiple weights as sans serif characters with further expansion planned to include serif characters, as well as support for non-Latin languages, which AccuWeather plans to leverage worldwide as a unified global brand.
In addition to the fresh, new typeface, the AccuWeather brand refresh, its first in six years, includes a new sonic ID and accompanying sonic branding elements. This audio expression of the AccuWeather brand will grow to be a recognizable sound across a wide range of AccuWeather products including digital, IoT and other audio services. These sonic elements have already launched on the 24/7 AccuWeather Network channel and will be incorporated into the AccuWeather app and AccuWeather.com soon.
Other recent upgrades to AccuWeather’s properties for a best-in-class user experience include enhancements to video and other graphic elements as well as to its digital architecture.
