A coffee shop in Castle Rock, Colorado, was packed on May 10, despite local officials calling for people to wear masks and to practice social distancing.
From vivid COVID-19 dreams, to worrying about having to start a new job hunt in a shaky economy, a lot of things are keeping us up at night during this coronavirus pandemic. One silver lining we can find in this coronavirus cloud hanging over us: a staple of our typical morning routine is returning during this anything but typical time. Starbucks is reopening hundreds of stores across the U.S. and Canada that were shuttered due to tightening COVID-19 restrictions. During the strict stay-at-home orders, the coffee giant has only been offering limited service through select drive-thrus, grocery locations, and stores located near hospitals and other first responder areas.
Your next trip get your favorite latte will be entirely different as stores will be operating in accordance with guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local public health authorities.

Customers may see Starbucks baristas and other employees wearing face masks and gloves while also constantly wiping down surfaces during their shifts. Managers will also be conducting temperature checks before the Starbucks employees start their shifts.
Customers are strongly encouraged to use the Starbucks app on their smartphone, which allows them to locate their closest store, order ahead and pay. In most cases, customers who use the Starbucks app can pick up their order from a barista at the door without even having to enter the store or at the drive-thru. For the customers who want to enter the Starbucks store, social distancing will still be in place. They may be able to pick up their order at the counter.

At select Starbucks locations where social distancing can be accommodated, customers can place their order in the store and take it to-go. There will be a limited number of customers in the store at one time, floor markers and signage will promote social distancing, and seating areas will not be open
In some places, customers can also use Starbucks Delivers to have their favorite Starbucks food or coffee brought right to their door to their door through UberEats. Starbucks is expanding its delivery footprint to several new markets. Check the UberEats app to see if your location is available.

A majority of Starbucks stores will continue drive-thru only service. While some Starbucks locations may continue operating as drive-thru only, others will expand services to include order ahead or grab-and-go pickups.
You may be hesitant to have Starbucks or any food delivered due to fear of possible transmission of coronavirus. Health officials say it is safe if you follow these directions:
-
Add a note for your delivery driver to leave the order at the door
-
Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds after picking up the order from outside your door
-
Wipe down the Starbucks cup the order was delivered in
-
If you want to go a step further, pour the Starbucks drink into your own decontaminated glass and place any food on your own plates
-
Wash your hands again for at least 20 seconds after transferring the food and drink
-
Wipe down the surfaces again
-
After eating and drinking the Starbucks order, wash your hands again for at least 20 seconds

While Starbucks reopening will allow us to get back to some semblance of life before this “new normal,” it’s no time to let our guard down. A coronavirus cure or vaccine is still said to be one year away. Until then, we must still practice social distancing, wash our hands, and wear a cloth mask and gloves when outdoors.
