Week after week of record unemployment numbers is sobering proof that COVID-19 is hitting the economy hard. Within two weeks alone in March 2020, nearly 10 million people lost their jobs. Many of the jobless Americans were previously employed at small businesses that were forced to temporarily close or scale back operations due to tightening coronavirus restrictions. While some major companies like Victoria’s Secret, Gap, and Macy’s are starting to furlough employees due to a downturn in foot traffic at their retail stores, others are moving in the opposite direction by going on a hiring spree. The new jobs aren’t just in the health sector. Many of them are in businesses that will stay open as they’re deemed essential by the government guidelines.
