NMM Model Improvements Launched
The U.S. government is launching a new version of the NMM Forecast Model today, effective with this morning's "run" (12Z). The NMM, or Non-hydrostatic Mesoscale Model, is the short-range forecasting model of choice in the United States. It developed out of the classic ETA short-range forecasting model, combined with the high resolution, modern WRF model. The NMM forecasts for North America, every 3 hours, out through 84 hours (7 days).
This new version improves a number of the forecasting techniques. You can read the technical details in this announcement, or view their PowerPoint presentation online.
THE NMM SHOWS THE CHRISTMAS WEEKEND
STORM AT ITS MAXIMUM FORECAST RANGE
What this basically means is:
- More accurate precipitation amount forecasts
- Less false alarms for tropical systems in the summer
- No more weirdness off of Newfoundland, Canada
- More matching to weather balloon data, hence more accuracy
AccuWeather.com Professional carries the full suite of NMM products, including text output, SKEW-T plots, meteograms, and of course thousands of maps generated from dozens of variables and geographic areas.
