Final Super Tornado Outbreak 2011 Numbers
This blog entry is an update to the 2011 Super Outbreak of Tornadoes stats I wrote last week. Here are a few more resources of interest on this historic event. First, NOAA has a great page on the outbreak which gives a lot of official statistics, including some that I show below. First, a look at 62 tornado storm surveys completed by the NWS, and severe weather reports for last week:
There are not many EF-5's (extremely strong), and you wouldn't expect to see very many. As more surveys come in, this graph could change. As far as severe weather reports, this Spring is trouncing 2010; this time time last year, we had only seen 275 tornado reports and 2477 severe weather reports! This year (so far) even beats the record 2008 severe weather season only had 549 and 7254. For more on the 2008-2010 comparison, see my severe weather stats blog from last year
The graph above shows the number of severe weather watches and warnings issued by the NWS, and also a count of the number of lightning strikes via Vaisala.
Here is a list of records broken or threatened, and the most recent number which was higher:
*Preliminary stats from SPC. NWS officially says ">600" and "881" in the story linked above.
PHOTOS: Check out incredible tornado damage photos via Boston.com and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). Photos from NOAA can be vied via reports from their national web page, Ocean Service, and local offices: Jackson, Mississippi, Atlanta, Georgia, and more.
MUST READS: Also check out this exclusive interview with a NASA meteorologist who was in the path of one of the EF-4 tornadoes, and this blog by meteorologist Jon Davies, where he says that the atmosphere was the juciest he's ever seen it, compared to previous major tornado events. In addition, here is a cool graph by AccuWeather.com Facebook Fan Ralph F. showing the severe weather reports for April, by state.
