A deadly start to the summer wildfire season in Northern California after a prison inmate has died on the fire lines in a remote part of Humboldt County.
The state Department of Corrections announced Thursday, a 26-year old inmate died when a 120-foot tree uprooted and fell on him.
Prison officials said Matthew Beck was leading a crew clearing brush to contain the fire. He died before a helicopter could reach him.
Beck is the fourth inmate firefighter to die in California since the state created prison firefighting crews in the 1940's.
He was serving a six year sentence for burglary at a fire camp out of Del Norte County.
