Relentless stormy pattern to maintain grip over UK into next week

By Eric Leister, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

As powerful floodwaters raced down a road Laxey, Isle of Man, on Oct. 1, a van was swept away, eventually coming to a stop hundreds of feet from where it originally was.

It has been a wet and stormy start to October in the United Kingdom, and that pattern will continue for another week as frequent storms from the Atlantic deliver rounds of rain and wind.

Multiple flooding rain events have already saturated much of the country, and additional bouts of rainfall in the coming days will bring renewed chances of flooding.

Gusty west winds of 20-30 mph (32-48 km/h) with a few isolated gusts to 40 mph (64 km/h) were reported on Wednesday with rainy spells across Northern Ireland, Scotland, Northern England and Wales.

Blustery showers will continue to affect much of the United Kingdom on Thursday as another storm approaches from the Atlantic Ocean.

The steadiest rainfall is expected from northern Wales into western Scotland where a few locations may experience minor flooding.

Southern and eastern England will get a brief break for any wet weather on Thursday; however, gusty winds will remain in the forecast.

A new storm may then bring another round of locally heavy rainfall from Northern Ireland into northern England and Scotland on Friday along with more strong winds.

While the heaviest rainfall is forecast across northern parts of the country, wind gusts of 30-40 mph (48-64 km/h) will be common across Northern Ireland, Wales and England.

A plume of moisture from the Atlantic will produce more rainfall across the country on Saturday ahead of a third storm system on Sunday and Monday.

This storm may produce widespread heavy rainfall over much of the country and bring yet another round of strong winds.

Detailed London weather forecast

Total rainfall of 50-100 mm (2-4 inches) is expected in southwestern England, Wales, northwestern England, western Northern Ireland and western Scotland with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 150 mm (6 inches).

This magnitude of rainfall on top of the recent wet weather will result in some streams overflowing their banks and also cause flooded roadways resulting in travel disruptions.

The gusty winds accompanying the wet weather may also result in downed trees and power cuts due to saturated soil.

Leaves downed by the gusty winds may also result in urban and street flooding due to clogged drains and can also result in slick driving conditions.

This stormy weather pattern doesn't appear like it will subside anytime soon as more wet and windy weather is possible next week.
