Tropical Cyclone Megh Passing near Socotra Island
As of Saturday morning, EST, Tropical Cyclone Megh is located approximately 335 miles east of Socotra Island, Yemen. Megh is moving toward the west at 8 mph. Maximum-sustained winds remain near 85 mph with gusts to 105 mph.
Megh is forecast to continue to strengthen as it moves westward, possibly becoming a category-two-strength system in the next 24 hours briefly before diminishing. Megh will produce locally heavy rainfall and strong winds across the island of Socotra later this weekend.
Beyond Socotra, dry air from the Arabian Peninsula should result in rapid weakening of Megh as it passes near the horn of Somalia and approaches southwestern Yemen early next week. By the time Megh reaches Yemen it will have lost much of its intensity and the heavy rainfall potential may be greatly reduced.
A developing area of low pressure east of southern India will strengthen on its way to the west and could cause a strong wind and heavy rain event over southeast and southern India later this weekend and early next week.
