Storm Miguel to bring wet, windy weather to UK on Friday and Saturday

By Eric Leister, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Winds from Storm Miguel caused blowing sand and high seas along the French Atlantic Coast on June 7. The intense cyclone put French officials on Orange Alert, for winds over 70 mph.

A rare named June storm will strike the United Kingdom into Saturday, bringing downpours and gusty winds.

Storm Miguel was named by the Spain Meteorological Service and brought impacts to northern Spain and France before tracking northward into the U.K.

Three people were killed and a fourth was missing after a boat capsized off the coast of France during the stormy weather on Friday, according to BBC.

Miguel 6/7

Rain overspread southern England and southern Wales Thursday night before advancing northward across the remainder of Wales and England on Friday.

The rain will taper off to showers across southern England Friday night, while a steady rain falls over the remainder of England, Wales and Scotland.

As the rain tapers off, a strong westerly wind will pick up across Wales and England Friday night and continue into the day on Saturday. While the wind is not expected to be strong enough to cause damage, any loose items can be blown out of yards and some minor travel disruptions are possible.

A steady rain will fall across Scotland and Northern England throughout the day on Saturday, with rain tapering off to showers farther south. Showers will continue to dampen Scotland and Northern England on Saturday night.

Northern Ireland will dodge the steadiest rainfall from Storm Miguel, with a couple of showers expected on Friday afternoon.

A period of rain is possible around Belfast on Friday night before showery weather returns to all of Northern Ireland on Saturday and Saturday night.

Saturday's showers across Northern Ireland, Wales and England will be accompanied by strong winds, making it feel more like April than June.

Frequent wind gusts of 20-30 mph (32-48 km/h) are expected with occasional gusts up to 40 mph (65 km/h).

Temperatures on Saturday will range from 11-14 C (52-58 F) across Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and Northern England.

The remainder of England will be slightly milder, with afternoon highs of 14-18 C (58-64 F).

Anyone attending Capital's Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium on Saturday will want to be prepared for possible rainfall and cool, gusty winds.

The Great North Swim, South of England Show and Royal Cornwall Show will all be impacted by the wet and windy weather on Saturday.

The weather will improve slightly for Sunday; however, there will continue to be a risk of showers throughout much of the U.K. along with a cool breeze.

Showers will remain in the forecast across northern parts of the United Kingdom on Monday and Tuesday with the potential for periods of rain in the south.

More unsettled weather is possible across the United Kingdom during the second half of next week.
