More cold, snow in store for Moscow into this weekend

By Eric Leister, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Cold weather and the threat for snow will continue to plague Moscow into this weekend.

Moscow recorded its first snowfall of the season over the weekend followed by occasional snow showers earlier this week.

The city is in its coldest stretch of weather since February as temperatures will continue to struggle to climb above freezing into Saturday.

Moscow 10/23

Daytime high temperatures are not expected to rise above 1 C (34 F) through Saturday, making it feel more like late November than late October.

The normal high in Moscow during late October is around 6-7 C (43-44 F).

Overnight conditions will also be quite chilly with temperatures bottoming out near minus 3 C (27 F) through the weekend.

Generally dry weather is expected to last into Thursday, but the threat for snow will return to the area on Thursday night and Friday.

A weakening storm system will bring snow showers as early as Thursday evening, which will continue into Friday.

While the snow is not expected to be heavy, the persistent cold leading up to the storm will allow any snowfall to accumulate both on grass and paved surfaces.

Slippery travel is expected with the most significant impacts during the Friday morning commute.

Chilly air will hold over the city and surrounding areas through the weekend with a chance for some additional snow showers.

Temperatures will climb enough to allow rain to mix with the snow showers during the day on Sunday and also limit accumulations on pavement.

While conditions are expected to be slightly milder next week, winter jackets will still be needed for the foreseeable future. Temperatures are not expected to climb above 5 C (41 F).
