Glastonbury Festival 2019: Warm, dry weather to prevail following weeks of downpours

By Eric Leister, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

The weeks leading up to the start of Glastonbury Festival 2019 were filled with bouts of heavy rainfall across southwest England, creating concerns that the festival would be a muddy washout.

Rainfall on Tuesday furthered those fears, but a change in the weather pattern will bring dry weather just in time for this year's festival.

Overcast skies looked foreboding as gates opened for this year's festival on Wednesday, but a dry start to festivities brought high spirits among the thousands entering for the first of five days of music and activities.

While rain gear may not be needed this year, wellies may still be useful as water-logged fields may turn into a muddy mess as thousands of people descend on Worthy Farm.

The Glastonbury area typically receives around 37 mm (1.45 inches) of rain for the month of June. From June 1-24 this year, the region has received around 86 mm (3.38 inches) of rain.

The biggest threat for rainfall during this year's event will be on Saturday as a weak frontal boundary approaches and brings a small chance for a shower or thunderstorm.

If thunder rumbles, anyone outdoors is advised to move to a safe location immediately.

"Under a tree or in a tent is not a safe location. Seek out a building or, if you have to, your car," AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys said.

Glastonbury is also known for intense heat waves and cold snaps; however, extreme temperatures are not expected this year.

Unseasonable warmth is forecast for much of the festival this year. After a seasonable start to the festival on Wednesday, building warmth is expected in the coming days.

A high temperature of 24 C (75 F) is expected on Thursday with sunny spells.

Another day filled with sunshine is forecast for Friday as temperatures climb all the way to 26 C (79 F).

Anyone attending the events will want to make sure to drink plenty of water and seek shelter from the sunshine at times.

Unseasonable warmth will continue on Saturday with an afternoon high temperature near 27 C (80 F), before the coolest air of the festival arrives on Sunday when temperatures max out near 21 C (70 F).

Nighttime lows will generally be comfortable with temperatures ranging from 12-16 C (54-62 F).
