Flooding threat to continue in southern India, Sri Lanka this week

A change in the weather pattern will result in downpours returning to Sri Lanka and parts of southern India through early this week.
Largely dry weather prevailed across the region over the past two weeks; however, a large area of showers and thunderstorms tracking westward across the Bay of Bengal will bring the return of rainfall.
Locally heavy rain will spread across Tamil Nadu and Kerala on Monday and Tuesday, which will increase the threat for flash flooding. While all of southern India will have the threat for heavy rainfall, locations along the southern coast have the greatest chance for flash flooding.
Locations at risk for flooding include Chennai, Puducherry and Thoothukudi.
Daily showers and thunderstorms are also expected to continue across Sri Lanka into midweek, elevating the risk for localized flooding.
Late in the week and into the weekend, a tropical cyclone may attempt to develop across the southern Bay of Bengal between the Andaman and Nicobar islands and Sri Lanka.
While this tropical low is developing, there may be a few dry days in southern India late in the week. However, as the tropical low tracks to the west, downpours may return during early December.
Development and track of any potential tropical cyclone will then determine if heavy rainfall remains across Sri Lanka and southern India, or if the threat shifts farther north into Andhra Pradesh.
