Thunderstorms target the Great Lakes, Northeast through Sunday

While the focus during the coronavirus pandemic is on physical health, experts say our mental health should also be a top priority.

Waves of wet weather will continue this weekend as drenching rain and thunderstorms spread across the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Northeast through Sunday.

Those itching to get outside for some fresh air this weekend will want to bring along an umbrella as rounds of rain are predicted.

The same storm system responsible for severe weather across the center of the country, blizzard conditions in Colorado and accumulating snow in the northern Midwest, kicked off the weekend with rain and thunderstorms.

As multiple rounds of thunderstorms tracked across portions of central Indiana, Ohio and western Pennsylvania, numerous reports of flash flooding were reported on Saturday.

Areas around and just south of Pittsburgh experienced flash flooding Saturday and Saturday night, resulting in extensive damage to area basements and roadways.

The flooding event turned deadly as one man was swept away into floodwaters near Herminie, Pennsylvania, just southwest of Pittsburgh, Saturday evening.

A stiff westerly wind will usher in drier conditions, which will filter from west to east into Sunday afternoon from the Ohio Valley into portions of the Northeast and mid-Atlantic.

The general drying may allow for the atmosphere to become more unstable across western Pennsylvania and western New York, bringing in another round of storms.

Storms refining across the region Sunday afternoon will be capable of producing gusty winds, downpours and even some small hail will continue to advance through the eastern Great Lakes and portions of the interior Northeast.

As this round of rain and thunderstorms moves across the Northeast, it will target areas farther north and east that had less thunderstorm activity at the start of the weekend.

Although likely not as strong, breezy conditions will linger into Monday as cooler air seeps in, bringing AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures below the actual reading on the thermometer across the Great Lakes and much of the Northeast.

Across New England, precipitation is likely to continue through early week as the storm stalls off the coast of Maine.

Temperatures across far northern New England will be hovering near the freezing mark Sunday night, allowing for some of the precipitation to fall as snow. Low enough temperatures will continue into Monday, allowing for snow to continue.

Accumulations will be heaviest in the northern half of Maine up towards the upper portion of the St Lawrence River Valley.

Despite the storm moving off into the northern Atlantic by Tuesday, a strong flow off the Great Lakes may keep lake-enhanced showers and plenty of clouds around.

The active weather pattern will continue across the United States for much of the coming week, bringing the threat for more wet weather into the start of April along with a host of temperatures swings.
