Another race in the NASCAR Cup series will be under threat of showers and thunderstorms as an active pattern continues over southern Florida to end the weekend.
Engines will rumble to life at the Homestead-Miami Speedway Sunday afternoon as the Dixie Vodka 400 kicks off at 3:30 p.m., EDT.
While spotty showers and thunderstorms that pop up into the afternoon hours are typical for this time of year, a storm system lingering over Florida can lead to a more active day than normal.
"A west wind aloft combined with the system over the area can allow showers and thunderstorms to develop throughout much of the day," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Frank Strait.

Showers and storms that move through the Homestead, Florida, area during the late morning or early afternoon could lead to a rain delay.
Even if the green flag is dropped on time, it will be difficult to run through 267 laps without pausing for an outbreak of rain into the evening hours.
"Plenty of moisture in the region can fuel heavy downpours with shower or storm that develops," added Strait.
Some storms can be slow-moving, which will increase the risk for flash flooding across southern Florida and could lead to ponding water on the track. This could extend the time needed to dry the track if any delays are needed.
This active pattern will have its benefits for drivers. Mostly cloudy skies will help to limit sunshine and could keep temperatures inside the race cars slightly cooler.
"With the temperatures in the 80s and humid conditions, it will make for a warm afternoon in the cars," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alan Reppert. "But any clouds will help conditions in the cars."
In the event that the Dixie Vodka 400 gets postponed on Sunday, it will be difficult to complete the race during the beginning of the week as showers and thunderstorms will remain in the forecast across southern Florida on Monday and Tuesday.
