AccuWeather Global Weather Center, October 8, 2020 — AccuWeather today announced that Oliver Knowlton has been named Chief Strategy Officer (CS0), reporting directly to Founder and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Joel N. Myers, effective immediately.
Knowlton joined AccuWeather in 2018 on a part-time basis to help manage the Local Media Solutions business unit, which serves local television, newspapers, radio, digital out of home and broadcast partnerships in top media markets, and was promoted shortly thereafter to Senior Vice President (SVP), Strategic Development, joining Myers’ dynamic leadership team and overseeing the creation and execution of strategic corporate initiatives, working directly with Myers and President Steven R. Smith.
In his expanded role as CSO, Knowlton will partner with executives across AccuWeather to accelerate product development, improve processes and execution and capitalize on his significant experience in corporate strategy and structure. Additionally, Knowlton will continue to assess operational and strategic risks.
“Oliver has been a trusted advisor since the day he joined AccuWeather and even before that as a consultant,” said Myers. “I am very pleased to see him broaden his purview here at AccuWeather as Chief Strategy Officer and leverage his expertise in operational efficiency and strategic execution to propel AccuWeather further forward as a growth company, as we have done for 58 years. AccuWeather, known for its Superior Accuracy, is at the critical intersection of digital media and technology and his unique perspective combined with his strong track record of leadership at the most senior level, make him the ideal choice for this important leadership role.”
Said Knowlton, “With so many people across the globe depending on AccuWeather as their most trusted source of weather forecasts and warnings, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to step into this extraordinary position and continue building and reinforcing AccuWeather’s powerful partnerships, while seizing on the myriad of new opportunities for growth within our dynamic field and industry.”
As SVP, Strategic Development, Knowlton oversaw the AccuWeather line of business dedicated to the promotion and management of radio, newspaper, local television partnerships, AccuWeather’s local television solutions business, as well as digital out of home. This included building and securing partnerships serving ABC Owned and Operated Stations within the top eight markets, such as New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, San Francisco, Raleigh-Durham and Fresno.
In a comprehensive study conducted earlier this year, renowned research and consulting company, Kantar analyzed and compared TV weather forecast accuracy in those top eight markets, concluding that AccuWeather/ABC forecasts are the most accurate by a significant margin, confirming AccuWeather’s Superior Accuracy.
And, in study after study of weather forecast accuracy -- including the most recent and complete study by independent industry tracker ForecastWatch, which examined 120 million forecasts in over 1,100 locations -- AccuWeather has consistently emerged as the clear accuracy winner in all categories verified – temperature, precipitation and wind speed.
Prior to joining AccuWeather, Knowlton held leadership positions at renowned media and digital enterprises such as TIME Inc., MediaNews Group, One News, PointRoll and Gannett.
When Knowlton is not working, he is a passionate volunteer, donating his time to CitySquash, a Bronx-based urban youth program, and Brooklyn Tech Talks, a (700+) Meetup group dedicated to broad technology issues.
