AccuWeather moves to seize leadership positioning in the weather news, information and video space with newly reorganized Media Content Group.
AccuWeather Global Weather Center – January 8, 2019 — AccuWeather, the largest and fastest-growing weather media company and global leader in weather-related big data, business and analytics, today announced the formation of its newly organized Media Content Group—formerly AccuWeather Digital Media Content and Operations (DMCO) and AccuWeather Network groups—to aggressively pursue expansion opportunities in weather news, information and video.
The newly formed Media Content Group is being overseen by AccuWeather Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) and Media Content Group General Manager John Dokes. As CMO, Dokes will continue to report to AccuWeather Founder and President, Dr. Joel N. Myers. As head of the new Media Content Group, Dokes will report to Steve Smith, AccuWeather President of Digital Media.
“This realignment will enable the streamlining of content development and distribution, while ensuring the consistency, reliability and high quality of content across all AccuWeather platforms,” said Smith. “Our users rely on AccuWeather to plan their lives, protect their properties and businesses, and to keep their families safe. AccuWeather’s commitment to compelling video content is already moving our audiences across our multiple digital and video platforms for a truly personalized weather news experience, for both newsmaking severe weather events and all year long.”
Reporting to John Dokes in the newly formed Media Content Group are Trish Mikita, Vice President, Content, and Sarah Katt, Vice President of Content Operations and Video Strategy. David Taynor has been named Executive Director, Content Operations. Additionally, AccuWeather welcomed Jim Proeller, formerly of CNN and The Weather Channel, as Executive Producer, and Andrew Tavani, formerly Managing Editor at Tina Brown Live Media, and the Women in World website in association with The New York Times and AOL, as Executive Editor.
AccuWeather said its Media Content Group and expanding field and studio capabilities will lead to new programming initiatives as it edges towards seizing a leadership position in content creation and distribution.
“The consolidation of the new Media Content Group combines the best of comprehensive weather news coverage on site and in studio with gripping storytelling to help our users stay informed and make the very best decisions when weather is a factor,” said John Dokes. “Our team’s performance during the recent Hurricanes Florence and Michael, for example, kept our users and our audiences apprised of breaking news with superior and timely coverage and updates before, during and after these storms made landfall. Dramatic, exclusive footage gathered by our team in the field generated video views across our digital properties at record levels. I am so proud to be leading this talented, dedicated and growing team.”
