Another fresh round of arctic air will sweep from the Midwest to the East through Monday, delivering a brutal chill to the region yet again.

This new blast of cold air will follow in the wake of a messy wintry storm that impacted the Midwest and Northeast over the past couple of days.

The coldest air Sunday was felt across the Upper Midwest where high temperatures remained below-zero.

The combination of snowpack and clear skies will allow temperatures to plummet Sunday night across Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. Monday morning commute temperatures will be in the negative teens for many in this area.

Even in the south, temperatures will drop below freezing across northern Georgia to central Louisiana and southern Texas Sunday night. This will lead into a very chilly Monday across the same area. High temperatures will range between 15 to 25 F below-normal.

The cold air will spill into the East Sunday night. Rapid temperature drops may occur in some places. Motorists heading to work will want to be alert for patches of ice on the roadway.

The cold air is expected to arrive with less force this time across the Northeast.

“The cold air will moderate some as it moves into the Northeast by Monday, so it should not be quite as cold as the last round,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Evan Duffey said.

Regardless, folks will still need to bundle up if they plan on heading outside. Hats, gloves, scarves and a thick jacket will help fight off some of the cold. Kids waiting for the school bus Monday morning will be especially vulnerable to the cold.

“Monday’s reinforcing cold may catch some people off-guard from Washington D.C. to Boston since it will be following a brief warmup from Sunday,” Duffey said.

The cold will put an end to that brief warmup. There will likely be a 25-to-30 degree difference between highs on Sunday compared to Monday.

Highs on Monday will be in the low to mid-20s across the interior Northeast but closer to the I-95 corridor, temperatures should top out in the low to mid-30s.

Temperatures over the next couple of days and nights could cause problems to plumbing. Frozen pipes can cause a major headache to home owners. However, steps can be taken to prevent the cold weather from wreaking havoc on your pipes.

While the air will be cold enough for snow, the combination of high pressure and dry air will keep the region dry over the next couple of days.

The only except to this will be near the Great Lakes where there could be a few snow showers through Monday.

“As the middle of the week approaches, the coldest air will begin to moderate,” Duffey said.

“We expect the end of December to be a bit more mild in the East as the cold air gets held up in the West.”
