Typhoon Champi and Another Area of Concern
The West Pacific has some tropical features to monitor at the moment. Koppu has weakened into an extratropical low and is not expected to redevelop into a tropical depression. Typhoon Champi is well to the south of Japan and another area of concern to the best of Wake Island has potential to develop into the next tropical system in the West Pacific. The satellite image below shows where all of these features are currently.

What was Koppu will move slowly northward over the next three to five days. The main risk that will remain will be some flooding for the far northern Philippines, eastern coast of Taiwan and the southern Ryukyu Islands. Expect some places to receive a few to as much as 6 inches of rain. The graphic below shows the area where we think the flooding risk will be.

Typhoon Champi is expected to turn off to the northeast and miss Japan. It will begin to weaken slowly and become possibly become a non-tropical low by late in the weekend and early next week. Regardless, no major impacts to land are expected and the graphic below where we think it will track.

Future tropical development is possible just to the east of Wake Island over the next few days. It is a low chance since this area of disturbed weather has a small window to develop into a tropical cyclone. This is due to a strong trough expected to move across this part of the basin later this week. This will increase wind shear meaning tropical development will be highly unlikely. The long-range graphic below shows where we think development can occur.

Otherwise, the rest of the basin is not expected to see any tropical development over the next two weeks.
