Strong wind to blast Germany, Low Countries on Tuesday

A potent storm will bring the risk of damaging wind across Germany and parts of the Low Countries on Tuesday.

This strengthening storm may become a named windstorm as it whips up potentially damaging wind gusts across Belgium, the Netherlands and northern Germany.

While wind may not be as strong across southern Germany, rail and flight delays may still be possible due to a gusty wind along with the risk for wintry precipitation.

The strongest wind will be felt across northwest Germany and the Netherlands where AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys expects wind gusts to reach 80-105 km/h (50-65 mph). The strongest of these gusts will occur in coastal areas.

Wind gusts over 80 km/h (50 mph) are possible in Amsterdam, Bremen and Hamburg throughout the day on Tuesday.

Wind of this magnitude could lead to down tree limbs and scattered power outages. Roys said, "There may also be minor coastal flooding and road closures."

Across central and southern Germany, wind gusts of 65-80 km/h (40-50 mph) will be more common. Although wind will not be as strong in these areas, the gusts could still prompt rail and flight delays across the region.

Accompanying the wind will be periods of rain throughout the region. This will reduce visibility for drivers and may make for slower commutes in Berlin, Frankfurt and Dresden.

In southern Germany, Roys expects enough cold air to be in place for snow to mix with the rain. Locations from Stuttgart to Munich could experience a period of blizzardlike conditions due to the combination of snow and strong winds.

In the Alps, more snow is expected on top of the heavy snow that fell late last week and over the weekend. Additional snow from Tuesday into Wednesday could reach 60 cm (2 feet) in the higher terrain.

Anyone traveling in the backcountry should be on alert for avalanches as the threat will remain high. Skiers, snowboarders and hikers should carry the appropriate gear, including an avalanche beacon, probe and shovel. Always travel in the backcountry with a partner.

Avalanches and other snow-related accidents over the weekend claimed the lives of at least six people in the region, according to the Associated Press.

Rain and snow showers will continue across parts of eastern and southern Germany on Wednesday with a gusty breeze.

Lasting snow accumulation and additional travel disruptions will be possible across Saxony and Bavaria on Wednesday and Wednesday night.

Additional snow showers are expected in eastern and southern Germany on Tuesday while the rest of the region.
