Powerful earthquake triggers tsunami warning in Indonesia
A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck offshore of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Friday evening, triggering a tsunami warning.
Local officials issued the warning for the eastern coast of Sulawesi for a potential tsunami up to 0.5 of a meter (1.6 feet). The warning has since been canceled.
The epicenter of the earthquake and strongest shaking occurred over the open waters of the Gulf of Tolo.
The earthquake was felt strongly by residents in Palu City, Luwu District, Morowali and Banggai, according to Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a head official with the country's National Board for Disaster Management.
