Police officers in West Long Branch, New Jersey, responded to a call that a boy fell through the thin ice and was stranded in 35-degree water.
In a dramatic rescue captured on police bodycam footage, an 11-year-old boy was saved after falling through the ice on a frozen lake in northern New Jersey on Monday. The incident took place at Franklin Lake in West Long Branch.
The video shows the boy stranded in the middle of the icy lake, standing in shallow water with temperatures estimated at a frigid 35 degrees Fahrenheit, making self-rescue impossible. Officer Dave Brosonski of the West Long Branch Police Department quickly responded to the emergency.
In the footage, Officer Brosonski is seen securing a rope around his waist at the lake's edge before carefully entering the icy waters. He navigates through the freezing conditions and broken ice to reach the boy. Brosonski successfully freed the child and carried the crying child safely back to shore.
Following the rescue, the boy was transported to a local hospital as a precautionary measure. Authorities revealed the boy had been attempting to take a shortcut across the lake to get home when he fell through the ice and thanked Officer Brosonski for his actions.
"The West Long Branch Police Department is deeply grateful for Officer Brosonski’s swift and heroic actions, as well as for the community members who quickly alerted authorities."
