A hiker's dog survived after falling some 200 feet over a waterfall near Lake Tahoe.
The hiker called 911 at around 10:22 a.m. on Jan. 25 to report that his dog, "Moscow," fell some 200 feet at Cascade Falls, near Emerald Bay.
"Moscow's owner was determined to find a way down the cliff to get to Moscow," the sheriff's office said. "Given the circumstances and deep concern for safety, members of the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue responded to provide aid for Moscow."
With assistance from El Dorado Animal Control and a drone from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, search and rescue volunteers responded to the base of the falls and located Moscow. A good Samaritan who was in the area ice climbing had stopped to attend to the injured animal.
Due to his injuries, Moscow's ability to move was "greatly hindered." Rescuers used a harnessed backpack made specifically for transporting animals to carry Moscow out of the slick ice hike to the safety of a warm vehicle.
Moscow was taken to an emergency veterinarian but was "doing well," according to the sheriff's office.
