Month’s worth of rain to soak Buenos Aires, Montevideo by Tuesday
Several days of heavy rain and thunderstorms will target parts of Argentina and Uruguay in the coming days.
The prolonged rain event will total more than a month’s worth of normal rainfall in many locations.
Normal rainfall for the month of November from Cordoba to Buenos Aires and Montevideo is roughly 75-100 mm (3-4 inches).
Rainfall through Tuesday is expected to total 75-150 mm (3-6 inches) with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 250 mm (10 inches) across parts of northern and eastern Argentina, as well as southern Uruguay.
No reprieve is forecast into Sunday night as the same areas endure another day of rain and thunderstorms.
The rainfall will expand northward into Sunday night, soaking areas from Santiago del Estero to Entre Rios as well as much of Uruguay.
These areas will also be at risk for thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and hail.
Conditions will worsen further from Sunday night into Monday night as a storm system emerging from the Andes crosses northern Argentina and southern Uruguay, bringing torrential rainfall and the risk for damaging winds.
The repeated rounds of rainfall will result in a dangerous flooding situation for the hardest-hit areas. Any areas of rugged terrain will be at risk for mudslides.
The weather will finally begin to improve across northern Argentina on Tuesday as the heaviest rainfall shifts into northern Uruguay and southeastern Brazil.
Those areas will be at risk for flooding rainfall and locally severe thunderstorms from Tuesday into Tuesday night.
A beneficial period of dry weather is forecast across northern Argentina and Uruguay on Wednesday and Thursday.
Another frontal boundary will approach the region by next weekend and could bring some additional rain and thunderstorms.
This late-spring stormy pattern will continue into the summer as AccuWeather.com meteorologists are predicting a wetter-than-normal summer across northern Argentina, Uruguay and southeast Brazil.
