Monsoonal rain to bring more flooding to western India, southern Pakistan into midweek

Water surged uphill after the floodgates of Pong Dam in India’s northern state of Himachal Pradesh were opened following heavy rainfall.

Monsoonal rain will continue in western India and southern Pakistan into the middle of the week while another monsoon low brings rainfall to eastern India.

Elsewhere, waves of moisture from the Indian Ocean will continue to reach parts of southern Maharashtra and coastal Karnataka each day this week. These areas have been hit particularly hard so far this monsoon season.

"Over the past three months, many locations across the western shores of India have received above-normal amounts of rain this monsoon season compared to normal," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys.

Persistent heavy rain has led to deadly flooding across the region.

As reported by the Times of India, 245 of the more than 1,050 deaths from this year's monsoon have come from Maharashtra alone.

India 8/27

As rain continues in southwestern India, a monsoon low will bring the risk of flooding to parts of northwestern India and neighboring southern Pakistan.

The monsoon low will bring daily downpours to areas from Madhya Pradesh to southern Rajasthan and Gujarat. These downpours will also bring the risk of flooding to locations in Sindh province in Pakistan.

By Thursday, this low will start to wane, causing downpours to become more localized across the region. Isolated downpours will continue across Madhya Pradesh late this week and weekend while largely dry weather returns to locations farther west.

Meanwhile, locations in eastern India will be watching the Bay of Bengal as another monsoon low approaches the east coast this week.

"There is a small chance that this monsoon low will become a depression as the week progresses" said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Houk.

The low will continue to churn over the warm waters of the area for the next few days.

Whether this low develops into a depression or not, it will still send widespread, tropical downpours to parts of Odisha, northeastern Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

"The recent heavy rainfall on top of recent downpours will increase the chance of flooding," AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys said.

Locations from northeastern Andrea Pradesh to Odisha and as far inland as eastern Madhya Pradesh should be on alert for heavy rain during the second half of the week.
