Germany: Daily thunderstorms to target Frankfurt, Dresden and Munich this week

An unsettled weather pattern is expected across central and southern Germany this week as thunderstorms rumble each day.

Even though there will be the threat for daily showers and thunderstorms, temperatures will remain several degrees above normal into this weekend.

Daily high temperatures will range from 21-26 C (70-78 F) across the region, including Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Munich and Nuremberg.

This unseasonable warmth will be one of the ingredients that will fuel daily showers and thunderstorms.

These storms are not expected to be severe; however, locations that see multiple days of downpours could experience localized flooding problems.

A few of the strongest storms can produce damaging winds and small hail.

Daily travel disruptions are also expected as thunderstorms can result in poor visibility, slower rail traffic and flight delays.

While southern and central areas can expect multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms, northern Germany will remain largely dry with unseasonable warmth.

High pressure over Scandinavia will prevent the thunderstorms that develop across southern Germany from spreading farther northward through at least Friday.

High temperatures of 23-27 C (74-80 F) will prevail each day from Bremen and Hamburg to Berlin.

Despite many people enjoying outdoor activities amid this dry and warm weather, there will be an increased risk for wildfires this week.

Abnormally dry and warm weather has prevailed throughout northern Germany the entire month, setting the stage for wildfire development.

“The combination of warm and dry weather will yield conditions ripe for fires to form if precautions are not taken,” said AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys.

A stormy pattern setting up across western Europe for next week could finally bring some beneficial rainfall to parts of northern Germany.
