Disruptive snow to streak across midwestern US into Monday

By Kristina Pydynowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Disruptive snow is set to continue to put April warmth on hold across the midwestern United States into Monday morning.

The storm that triggered flooding in Central California to start the weekend will cause snow to sweep from the western Great Lakes to the Ohio Valley into Monday morning.

This swath of snow will lead to more travel disruptions, according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Rossio.

Between 3-6 inches of snow fell from a portion of the Dakotas to southwestern Minnesota and northern Iowa on Sunday.

St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri, were even coated with a bit of snow on Sunday and Sunday night.

The storm will weaken as it streaks eastward, leading to snow totals near 1-3 inches east of I-35. Amounts will be on the lower end of that range across the Ohio Valley.

"Snow amounts will be less from Chicago to Indianapolis; Cincinnati, Ohio; Lexington, Kentucky; and Charleston, West Virginia, than in the northern Plains, but there is still concern for slick spots with the snow falling at night," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Eric Leister said.

Early Monday morning commuters in these cities should watch for any lingering slick conditions. De-icing operations could affect anyone catching an early morning flight.

Untreated roads and sidewalks can transition from wet to slushy or slippery overnight as temperatures drop below freezing.

Spotty rain and snow are expected to spread into a part of the Northeast Monday into Tuesday. Snow showers will linger for a time over the Lower Peninsula of Michigan on Monday, threatening to reduce visibility for motorists.

The chilly air following this storm will not be as harsh and long-lasting as what the North Central states endured last week.

Temperatures are expected to rebound over most of the Plains and Great Lakes Tuesday into Wednesday with May-like warmth set to follow later in the week for some areas. That does not mean the end of winter for the entire region.

Snow potential 4.9 AM

Another storm may sweep across the upper Great Lakes with a swath of snow Wednesday into Thursday before a more significant storm could bring a late-season blizzard to the northern Plains to end the week.
