Arabian Sea Cyclone
As of Tuesday, a rather weak tropical cyclone was spinning over the open Arabian Sea between southern India and Somalia. The unnamed tropical storm, tracked by forecasters as `TC 05A`, held highest sustained winds of about 45 mph and was drifting slowly toward the west. Numerical weather forecasts plotted a path toward the west and the northwest through Friday. They also forecast 05A to weaken off the island of Socotra well off southeastern Arabia. Tropical cyclone landfalls upon southeastern Arabia do happen, but they are rare. An exception to the extreme was TC `Gonu` of the early summer. Gonu was rated as a Category 5 hurricane for a while and it went on to be destructive. As for tropical cyclones over the Arabian Sea overall, at least one happens in most years and a few have 4 or 5 storms.
