1 fatality reported as flooding, mudslides and snow strike Los Angeles area
Southwest Airlines flight 278 slid to the end of the runway while landing in heavy rain at Hollywood Burbank Airport on December 6th.
Southern California was slammed by heavy rainfall, pockets of steady snow and mudslide occurrences as the latest winter storm swept through the region. The conditions caused major traffic disruptions and flash flood threats as rockslides and mudslides forced road closures.
Some of the flooding can be attributed to the heavy rain in the burn scar areas near the Woolsey Fire in Los Angeles and the Holy Fire.
In the Sun Valley of Los Angeles, numerous lanes were shut down after an overturned vehicle resulted in one fatality.
Numerous other roads were shut down due to mudslides and loosened rock slides. Mudslides in the burn scar areas have trapped cars and covered roads in debris, while in Orange County, the Sheriff's Department issued a voluntary evacuation warning to residents.
Up to 4 inches of snow were reported, along with icy road conditions, near Frazier Park in Grapevine. The conditions caused numerous cars to slide across roadways, forcing officials to shut down the entire I-5 Freeway for several hours before reopening on Thursday afternoon.
The weather also caused problems at the Hollywood Burbank Airport, where a Southwest Airlines flight skidded off the runway. No injuries were reported and a passenger from inside the plane said the wet runway caused the plane to hydroplane upon landing.
