Storm Blows Away Fog in Central PA
Yesterday we had a situation where low clouds (fog, to those of us on the ground) was backed up against the mountains in Central Pennsylvania. This is not uncommon here, in fact I did a video blog using Google Earth and a satellite photo to show how the fog is trapped east of the mountains in August 2007.
What was interesting yesterday was how an approaching thunderstorm blew the fog away with its circular outflow (the outflow being both wind and dry air, neither of which fog/clouds can survive in). Local storm chaser Ron "R-Factor" Shawley was looking east from Vinco PA and said the fog appeared to be being blown eastward ahead of the storm so I checked the Visible Satellite animation on AccuWeather.com, and in fact you could see the outflow cutting away at the fog:
Ron also captured some other interesting things such as 1.) A possible funnel cloud 2.) A timelapse of the storm and 3.) Steam from the local power plant being sucked into the storm. Check out all his pictures and videos here.
