Tornado Zones in Canada

By Staff

Killer tornadoes in the U.S. have been dominating much of the news this spring. In Canada, tornadoes are obviously not as frequent compared to the United States, but Canada does rank second in tornado frequency globally.

The main tornado season in the United States generally runs from April through June. As the jet stream retreats farther north during the summer, the threat of severe thunderstorms diminishes across tornado alley in the U.S. but increases across southern Canada.

Most tornadoes that do touch down in Canada generally occur from June through August.

The map below from Canada Resources shows the regions of Canada with the highest frequency of tornadoes on average.

------- Upcoming random forecast thoughts....

--Potential for strong thunderstorms over parts of northwestern Ontario Friday. The greatest threats will be hail and damaging, straight-line winds.

--A quick shot of unseasonably cool air will push into the eastern half of the Prairies on Saturday. Temperatures could be as much as 6 degrees celsius below normal.

--The period from Sunday to Tuesday looks abnormally warm over western BC.

Looking farther ahead....

--For the weekend of June 11/12, it looks like some cooler air will spread into the Maritimes as a blocking high forms over Greenland and forces air from the far north farther south.

--A weak front could set up close to southern Ontario and perhaps focus an increase in thunderstorms in this region.
