A storm later this weekend is expected to significantly disrupt travel and could become the most impactful winter storm in several years. Snow is expected to overspread the New York City area late Saturday night and continue into early Monday, becoming heavy at times during the day Sunday. By Monday morning, the storm is expected to taper to a few lingering flurries. A total of 4-8 inches of snow is forecast, though amounts will depend on the track and intensity of a coastal storm as well as the extent of any sleet or freezing rain. A stronger storm with little or no mixing could result in around a foot of snow. The greatest chance for near a foot of accumulation extends across northwestern New Jersey and adjacent parts of southeastern New York. Streets and highways are likely to become snow packed and slippery for much of the storm. Frigid air following the system is expected to limit natural melting for several days.
