10 things to do when it rains on a cruise

By Staff, AccuWeather

Copied

A cruise ship off the coast of North Carolina had a rough time on Nov. 17, when it had to deal with the winds and waves of a powerful nor'easter. The ship, bound for Baltimore, had to slow to a crawl.

There are a million and one things to do on a cruise. Many people have a tough time deciding on a daily schedule while on the open ocean. To maximize your time on the cruise, it's important to stay up-to-date on local weather since it greatly impacts what you can and can't do. If you're anticipating rain, consider doing some of these activities.

1. Make it a cabin day

Many first-time cruisers are impressed with how busy an average day onboard can be. If you've been running around to experience everything there is to do on the cruise, you might be feeling slightly overwhelmed. When the rain starts pouring, you could always close those shades, throw the 'do not disturb' sign on your door, and make it a cabin day. Sleep in, order room service, or enjoy one another's company.

2. Hit the spa

The pitter-patter of raindrops can be a calming feeling. Why not take that relaxing sensation to the next level with an entire spa day? Whether you've been working out in the gym, riding the artificial wave, or spending a bit too much time hunched over the buffet, a nice spa day will do you good. From massages and saunas to pools and mani-pedi combinations, there's something for everyone.

3. Take advantage of the lack of crowds

When it rains on a cruise ship, the vast majority of passengers seek refuge below deck. If you're feeling adventurous and don't mind getting wet, this can be an excellent opportunity to explore the entire ship while it's busy. By taking advantage of the lack of crowds, you can enjoy the activities and see the places you skipped because of the long lines.

4. Play some board games.

Most cruise ships have a designated board game room that acts as a perfect refuge from cold and wet weather. While you should be able to find some of your favorite games onboard, it's always a good idea to bring a few of your own just in case. When in doubt, a pack of cards can provide you with hours of entertainment. Just make sure to get enough friends involved to make a day out of it.

5. Catch a movie

While watching a movie in your room is an obvious option, you might not know that cruises often host screenings throughout the ship when the weather isn't all sunshine and rainbows. Keep an eye out for announcements or notifications about where these movies might be displayed. The main auditorium or movie theater (if your ship has one) are always good bets. There might even still be an outdoor screening, so find some nearby cover for a prime spot.

6. Turn a page or two

Did you have plans to relax on deck and crack open that novel? Maybe you've been too busy testing out the cruise's vast array of activities to accomplish that goal. A rainy day is a perfect opportunity to make good on that promise to yourself. Your private deck should have an awning if you still want to enjoy the outdoors. If not, there should be more than enough quiet places to find under the deck.

7. Try your luck

If you're suffering from a lack of excitement on a rainy day, head below deck to the casino. Rain, sunshine, or monsoon, this portion of the ship is always willing to accept your money. Whether you're a poker aficionado, roulette junkie, or slot lover, you're bound to find something to help pass the time quickly until the sun decides to pop out again.

8. Pay a visit to the bar

There's no better way to drown your rainy day sorrows than with an open bar. Grab some friends to bring along or let down your guard and meet some new people. Be sure to ask the bartender about any special drinks onboard. Most cruise ships have the typical array of spirits, beer, and wine, but you might have a chance to try something unique to that cruise.

9. Catch a show

All cruise lines feature a variety of shows to keep their passengers entertained throughout the trip. From magic and game shows to concerts and dances, you should be able to find something to suit your taste. Check the schedule on a rainy day to see what's available as cruises might schedule more shows in anticipation of more attendees.

10. Try a new restaurant

Cruise lines are renowned for their delectable food options. Whether you're a fan of seafood or have strict dietary requirements, you should be able to find something to whet your appetite. Keep an eye out for special deals on a rainy day. Restaurants onboard might offer something unique to entice guests.
