Indoor exercising tips for when it's too cold outside

By Staff, AccuWeather

Fitness Expert John Basedow shows you how to set up your home gym so you can stay in shape all through winter.

Exercise is really important for optimal health. However, it's not always the most enjoyable task on the list of things to do for the day. While some people enjoy a great workout, there are many more who dread the sweat sessions. So when you have found a great workout that you love, it makes sense to stick with it. If you're someone who loves the outdoors, you're limited in the number of outdoor workouts you can do when it's cold outside. Thankfully, some alternatives will allow you to stay warm. Consider the following tips.

Join a local gym

For many, the gym is the best place to get an indoor workout in. The variety of machines and options work well for so many. Plus, if you want to put safety first, you can be free in a building without worrying about a dangerous situation. That's one of the reasons why many women feel like the gym is the best place to exercise. You'll also want to consider the best time to go to the gym. Once you get your membership, ask the staff about the times when the gym is the most crowded. If you don't want to endure a crowd or a long wait for machines, ask about the best time.

Create a home gym

One of the best things about exercise is that each person can create an experience that works for their needs. If you're a person who hates working out at the gym, you can always create your own workout at home. Invest in an elliptical machine that you can use at home. Purchase a few kettlebells or dumbbells so that you can work hard at home. A home workout will allow you to stay warm and comfortable as you remain in the confines of your home.

Find great workouts through apps

Technology is the wave of the present and the future. You can even embrace technology within your workouts. There are tons of apps that provide guided coaching sessions. If you want to learn how to run a 5K on the treadmill, you can download an app that prompts you through the entire running session. If you're someone who prefers to do some weight-lifting, you can find apps that help you in that area. There's an app for any workout that you'd like to try. To spice things up, try a few apps to see which ones work best for you and your goals.

Take advantage of the occasional warm days

Even though you might be restricted to indoor workouts while it's cold outside, don't lose hope. Keep the weather app on your phone or check the weather to see if there will be a day where the temperature rises. When you know ahead of time, you can plan to enjoy an outdoor walk, run, or cycling session. It's too cold, you'll know ahead of time. Plus, you can always add layers. If it's not too cold and you're not jeopardizing your safety or health, enjoy an outdoor workout.

Start a personal challenge

Think about an area that you'd really like to improve. If you'd like to build your curves, and focus on weight gain, develop a weight-training routine that helps with that goal. You'll also want to consider the types of food you consume. If you'd like to burn more fat, challenge yourself to get into the fat-burning zone during your workouts on the treadmill. If you're a runner, try to beat your time on the mile.

Wear the right wardrobe

When you look your best, it'll be easier to do your best. Granted, you don't need to wear a full face of makeup. That's not healthy for your skin or pores. However, you can build a stunning gym wardrobe. Even if you purchase a bunch of leggings in the same color (black), find simple black t-shirts to go with them. If you're someone who prefers to infuse some color, find matching exercise outfits in colors that complement your skin. When you look in the mirror after a sweaty workout, you can look at yourself with pride because you're doing something healthy and positive. Plus, you'll also feel even better about the way you're styled to perfection.

Bring a friend

There's nothing quite like maintaining a sense of accountability. When you have a friend who will go with you, it's a built-in accountability partner. Whether you'd like to experience weight loss or weight gain, you two can talk about the goals you have for yourselves. Then, create a schedule where you two will show up at the gym at the same time. It's a lot more fun when you can workout with someone you actually want to see.

As you work to create phenomenal experiences for yourself from a physical standpoint, you'll see the results you desire. As you get more positive results, it'll become easier to stick with your regimen. Whether it's cold outside or warm, you'll have no excuse to miss out on your next workout!
