New faces include bilingual broadcasters and environmentally focused field journalists skilled in cross-platform multimedia production, who will further strengthen the AccuWeather Network’s delivery of compelling content and rich video experiences.
AccuWeather Global Weather Center -- April 10, 2018 -- AccuWeather, the world's largest and fastest-growing source of weather forecasts and warnings, today announced new additions to the team of broadcasters and journalists at its AccuWeather Network -- the only "All Weather, All the Time" source for 24/7 weather broadcasts, providing millions of households with a smarter choice in localized weather programming. The expanded team of expert, on-air broadcast meteorologists and reporters will strengthen the AccuWeather Network’s capacity to provide compelling weather content and rich video experiences, while continuing the company’s commitment to growth and diversity.
Karuska Matos-Horta and Marvin Gomez have joined the network as bilingual TV weather broadcasters from Puerto Rico and Guatemala, respectively, sharing real-time weather forecasts and updates to English- and Spanish-speaking viewers. Jonathan Petramala, who joined the network as a bilingual weather news reporter, will produce innovative, unique stories from locations where severe weather is occurring, live in the field.
AccuWeather is one of the largest providers of forecasts for Spanish-language audiences, offering forecasts for Spanish-language apps, web and mobile sites, newspapers, radio groups, and TV stations in the U.S. and Mexico and throughout South America.
"We seek out talented experts who can best reach our viewers and let them know that AccuWeather cares about how impactful the weather can be on their everyday lives, for a more personalized experience," said John Dokes, General Manager of AccuWeather Network and AccuWeather Chief Marketing Officer. "Karuska, Marvin and Jonathan’s skills in forecast analysis and in-the-field weather reporting, in both television and digital platforms, will continue to elevate AccuWeather’s service to its viewers, keeping them safe and better prepared."
The network’s three new faces join an already dynamic team of forecasters and field correspondents, including extreme meteorologist Reed Timmer; nationally known broadcast meteorologists like Bernie Rayno, Laura Velasquez and Paul Williams; and many other experienced weather broadcasters dedicated to keeping viewers informed and safe.
Karuska Matos-Horta grew up in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, fascinated by clouds and rain. Watching the celebrated Puerto Rican meteorologist Ada Monzon inspired her to become a meteorologist. As a student at the University of Puerto Rico, Matos-Horta interned at the Sea Grant Program, Caribbean Tsunami Warning Program, and WIPR-TV in Puerto Rico, and at the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. After graduating in 2017, she joined the EcoExploratorio: Science Museum of Puerto Rico, where she worked with the museum’s president and founder—her longtime role model, Ada Monzon. She joined the AccuWeather Network in January 2018.
A native of Guatemala, Marvin Gomez moved to Chicago with his parents when he was a child. “My childhood years in Guatemala are nothing I would ever want to change, but I do thank my parents for bringing me to the United States in the search for the ‘American Dream,’” Gomez said. Gomez graduated from Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois, in 2016, after interning with Chicago’s ABC, Univision, and Telemundo television news stations. He subsequently joined a Spanish-language news station in Orlando, Florida. During 2017’s record-breaking hurricane season, Gomez directed the station’s weather coverage for Hurricanes Irma and Maria, as well as tropical storm Emily. He joined the AccuWeather Network in January 2018.
Jonathan Petramala earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism from Colorado State University in 2004, and worked as a reporter at stations including KWGN in Denver; Bay News 9 in Tampa; KRDO in Colorado Springs; and WTSP-TV in Tampa/St. Petersburg. He also managed the travel/lifestyle blog Journey with Jonathan before joining the AccuWeather Network in February 2018.
The AccuWeather Network focuses on local weather and also features national and regional weather of interest provided in context, reporting on top weather news and applying it to peoples' lives. Topics include safety, lifestyle, health, travel, business, and more.
The network is unique to customers, dedicated to helping viewers effectively "follow the stories" that most affect their lives by providing the most important weather updates and their impacts.
