AccuWeather Founder and President Dr. Joel N. Myers to be recognized for five decades of contributions to the Advancement of Applied Meteorology at the 2018 AMS Annual Meeting.
AccuWeather Global Weather Center -- January 04, 2018 -- Dr. Joel N. Myers, Founder, President, and Chairman of AccuWeather, the world's largest and fastest growing source of weather forecasts and warnings as well as a global leader in digital media and weather-related big data, will be recognized by the American Meteorological Society (AMS) at the group's 98th annual meeting, held January 7 to 11, 2018, in Austin, Texas.
Dr. Myers, who has been dubbed the "father of commercial meteorology" and who The New York Times called "the most accurate man in weather," will receive the 2018 Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Advancement of Applied Meteorology. According to the AMS, the award "recognizes an individual for contributions to the direct application of meteorological or climatological knowledge to the fulfillment of industrial or agricultural needs or in research and development of scientific knowledge, which can meet such needs."
Dr. Myers was named a fellow of the AMS in 2011, and this award reflects more than five decades of dedication to providing forecasts and customized weather information to industry, agriculture and the public so they can make the best decisions when weather is a factor.
"I am humbled and honored to receive this recognition from the American Meteorological Society," said Dr. Myers. "People and businesses in every industry around the world depend on being able to anticipate the impact of future weather conditions, and I'm very proud and gratified that every day the Superior Accuracy(tm) of AccuWeather's forecasts and warnings help billions of people around the world get more from their day, and help thousands of companies and government agencies plan better, minimize losses, operate more efficiently and keep their employees safe and out of harm's way."
Dr. Myers fell in love with weather at a young age. He went on to earn three degrees from Pennsylvania State University, which had one of the best meteorology programs in the country. He taught meteorology at Penn State for two decades, helping to launch the careers of future meteorologists, and he estimates by the time he stopped teaching, he had taught approximately 17 percent of the then practicing meteorologists.
Dr. Myers, who founded AccuWeather in 1962 while still a meteorology graduate student, says the establishment of AccuWeather epitomized his burning desire to combine his love of weather with this dream of being an entrepreneur. He has driven AccuWeather's growth, innovation and success for more than 55 years, and has been recognized in Entrepreneur Magazine's Encyclopedia of Entrepreneurs book as one of the greatest entrepreneurs in American history.
At a ceremony recognizing AccuWeather's 55th anniversary this past September, Dr. Louis Ucinelli, Assistant Administrator of NOAA and Director of the National Weather Service, said that Myers and his company "actually changed a fledgling industry--indeed, redefined it--and were a major force creating the private weather industry of todayÂ…AccuWeather has created numerous jobs and has shown other entrepreneurs the value of a private sector in our meteorological universe."
People and businesses rely on AccuWeather, available to nearly 2 billion people globally on every major platform and connected device, has long established itself as the world's best known and most respected weather brand. Myers estimates that over AccuWeather's history, the company has helped saved tens of thousands of lives and prevented tens of billion dollars in property losses. The company serves 245 of the U.S. Fortune 500 companies and thousands of other businesses and government agencies worldwide, including 78 of the Fortune 100 global companies as well as 900 radio stations, more than 200 TV stations and over 700 newspapers and digital signage customers worldwide.
Recently, the Superior Accuracy of AccuWeather's forecasts and warnings was confirmed in the most comprehensive global study ever undertaken by a third-party industry tracker. The study reviewed more than 30 million forecasts globally, and found AccuWeather to be the clear winner over all other competitors by a significant margin in all three categories it verified - temperature, precipitation and wind.
Dr. Myers received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in meteorology from Penn State University, where he was a faculty member for nearly 20 years and on the Board of Trustees for 33 years. In 2015 he was awarded Penn State's highest honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award, and in 2017 he received distinguished recognition for his lifetime and legacy of leadership as the honoree at the 41st Annual Penn State Renaissance Fund Dinner. In September, the National Weather Association honored Dr. Myers with its Special Lifetime Achievement Award.
