AccuWeather Now Serves All U.S.-based Class I Railroads with Addition of Norfolk Southern Railway

State College, PA, September 19, 2013 — AccuWeather today announced it has added Norfolk Southern Railway to the expanding list of organizations that receive its highly customized, site-specific severe-weather warnings to protect facilities and moving assets. With the addition of Norfolk Southern, AccuWeather now serves all U.S.-based Class I railroads, accounting for 69 percent of U.S. rail mileage and 94 percent of railroad revenue, as well as the largest railroads in Canada and Mexico.

AccuWeather’s SkyGuard® Severe Weather Warnings provides Norfolk Southern with proactive notification of impending threats to various dispatch offices within the company. The information assists the railway in protecting lives and property and allows for business continuity through timely and accurate forecasts and warnings of high winds, floods, tornadoes, ice, extreme temperatures, hurricanes and other severe weather that may threaten trains, rights-of-way, terminals and other critical physical plants.

For example, soon after AccuWeather began serving Norfolk Southern, heavy rains raised flash flood concerns for a 13-mile stretch of track between the cities of Meridian and Hattiesburg, Miss. Based on their detailed analysis of the location of the rainfall, AccuWeather forecasters determined that there was no risk to Norfolk Southern because no track damage was to be expected. Railway service was uninterrupted during the event and no damage to the track was reported.

“This milestone marks a new chapter in the growth of our business to deliver weather-related, mission critical offerings and services globally,” said Casey McGeever, Chief Commercial Officer of AccuWeather Enterprise Solutions. “We have a commitment to superior accuracy and delivering high-quality weather forecasts that customers depend on daily.”
