AccuWeather Updates 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season Forecast as Super El Niño Strengthens
AccuWeather lowers its named storm forecast to 8–14, but exceptionally warm Atlantic waters could fuel storms closer to the U.S. and leave less time to prepare.
While it’s already been busy in the Pacific this summer, there haven’t been many tropical systems to talk about in the Atlantic. But AccuWeather forecasters say a lot can change in August.

AccuWeather hurricane experts have lowered the expected number of named storms for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season as a strengthening El Niño increasingly influences the basin. But the risk of significant impacts to the United States remains.
AccuWeather now forecasts 8 to 14 named storms, down from the initial forecast of 11 to 16 issued in March. The forecast continues to call for 4 to 7 hurricanes and 2 to 4 major hurricanes, although AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva said the latest trends favor the lower end of both ranges.
AccuWeather continues to forecast three to five total direct impacts to the United States this season, including impacts that have already occurred. Another one to three direct U.S. impacts are forecast for the remainder of the season.
The distinction is critical for businesses and communities: A lower number of storms does not necessarily mean a lower risk of damaging impacts.

How Is Super El Niño Affecting the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Forecast?
A strengthening Super El Niño is expected to increase wind shear across the Atlantic, which can disrupt tropical storm and hurricane development. AccuWeather says the increasing strength of El Niño is the primary reason it lowered its 2026 named storm forecast.
AccuWeather forecasters anticipated El Niño when the initial Atlantic hurricane forecast was released in March. What has changed is the expected magnitude of the pattern. DaSilva said the likelihood of a Super El Niño developing has increased dramatically, with AccuWeather now estimating the probability at 95% to 100%.
“We saw in early summer that things were trending towards a much stronger El Niño than we had initially thought back in March,” DaSilva said. “It looked like we had a growing chance of that Super El Niño coming on during the fall months, and that is why we made that decision to lower some of the numbers.”
AccuWeather forecasters continually evaluate atmospheric and oceanic factors throughout hurricane season, including El Niño and La Niña, Atlantic water temperatures, steering patterns and the Bermuda High. Seasonal forecasts can be updated as those conditions evolve.
“So far, that is the major update, is that now we are leaning more on the lower end of our numbers, at least the hurricanes and major hurricanes,” DaSilva said.
Why Can 2026 Still Be a Dangerous Hurricane Season?
Exceptionally warm Atlantic waters remain a major concern. Those warm waters provide tropical systems with abundant energy and could counteract some of the suppressing effects of increased wind shear when atmospheric conditions become favorable.
They could also support the development of storms relatively close to the United States, potentially shortening preparation time.
AccuWeather forecasters continue to highlight the northern and northeastern Gulf Coast and the Carolinas as areas with an elevated potential for impacts during the remainder of the season.
“While we may not see a lot of long tracked hurricanes coming all the way across Africa, we may see some storms develop closer to the United States,” DaSilva said. “Those waters are really warm closer to the U.S., and as that storm gets closer, it could develop closer to home, giving us less time to prepare.”
Rapid intensification also cannot be ruled out. A tropical system that encounters a temporary pocket of lower wind shear could strengthen quickly over unusually warm waters.
“We do not want to let our guard down just because we are in an El Niño year,” DaSilva said.
How Many U.S. Hurricane Impacts Are Forecast in 2026?
AccuWeather forecasts three to five total direct U.S. impacts during the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, including impacts that have already occurred. Another one to three direct impacts are forecast for the remainder of the season.
AccuWeather defines a direct impact based on factors including a storm making landfall or passing close to the coastline, tropical-storm-force wind gusts on land, flooding rain and significant storm surge.
That impact-based approach is why the U.S. impact forecast has been maintained even as the expected number of named storms has declined.
“At the end of the day, that is the most important thing,” DaSilva said. “You can have 30 named storms, but if they all turn away from the land, it is not that impactful. On the contrary, you could have four or five named storms in a season, but if they all hit land, most people would consider that an active season.”
Hurricane Andrew illustrates the point. The Atlantic produced relatively few named storms in 1992, but Andrew devastated South Florida as a Category 5 hurricane.
“It is all in the impacts,” DaSilva said. “The impacts are the most important, and we are still calling for another one to three for the rest of the season.”
Why Storm Category Does Not Tell the Whole Story
AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Porter emphasized that organizations should not allow a forecast for fewer storms to create a false sense of security.
“One of the things I have learned over the years is sometimes there is complacency from some people or some businesses in years where there can be fewer numbers of storms,” Porter said. “We do not want there to be any complacency at all, because it only takes one event that can be a major impact.”
The danger is not limited to major hurricanes—or even hurricanes. Tropical storms and tropical rainstorms can produce catastrophic flooding, dangerous storm surge and other impacts far from the immediate coastline.
Tropical Storm Allison in 2001, for example, produced catastrophic flooding in the Houston area despite never reaching hurricane strength.

“It does not even have to be a storm that has a significant wind intensity,” Porter said. “Every storm has its own risk profile. You have got to prepare for the impacts that we are highlighting on that storm.”
For organizations with operations across multiple locations, the same tropical system can create very different risks from one facility or community to another, including coastal storm surge, destructive winds and inland flooding.

A strengthening Super El Niño could suppress Atlantic tropical activity later in the season, particularly if increased wind shear becomes widespread. Exceptionally warm Atlantic waters, however, mean the threat will not simply disappear.
With another one to three direct U.S. impacts forecast, businesses and communities along the Gulf Coast, East Coast and well inland should continue reviewing hurricane response plans, monitoring developing tropical systems and preparing to act when risks emerge.
