Waterspout tears across crowded South Carolina beach for second time in a week

It was the second waterspout in just over a week to move ashore at Folly Beach and become a confirmed EF0 tornado. No injuries were reported.

Within one week, two waterspouts spun ashore in Folly Beach, South Carolina, tossing tents and beach items into the air and sending people running.

For the second time in just over a week, a waterspout came ashore on a crowded South Carolina beach, sending chairs, umbrellas, tents and surfboards flying as people scrambled out of its path.

Video captured near The Washout at Folly Beach around noon on Saturday, Aug. 8, shows the waterspout moving inland from the ocean. The National Weather Service in Charleston later rated it an EF0 tornado with estimated peak winds of 55 mph. No injuries were reported.

The close call came just one week after another waterspout formed near the Folly Beach Pier on Aug. 1 and moved ashore about 10 minutes later.

That first waterspout was also rated an EF0 with estimated winds of 55 mph. It tossed tents, chairs and umbrellas into the air but caused no reported injuries or structural damage.

Forecasters had warned that conditions along the South Carolina and Georgia coasts were favorable for waterspout development over the weekend.

Waterspouts can become tornadoes once they move onto land, and even a weak one can quickly become dangerous when loose beach equipment starts flying.

These were two close calls in one week, but the same fortunate ending both times: plenty of dramatic video, with no reported injuries.
