UK: Sunday to turn drier after unsettled start to the weekend

Drier and warmer weather will return to the United Kingdom on Sunday after an unsettled start to the weekend.

After numerous showers moved across the United Kingdom on Saturday, an area of high pressure will settle across the region on Sunday. This will promote the return of drier weather through at least the beginning of the week.

While isolated showers will remain across Northern Ireland and Scotland on Sunday and Monday, chiefly dry conditions will return to England and Wales. The odd shower can not be ruled out in northern England.

In addition to the turn to drier weather, above-average temperatures will return to Wales and England early in the week. Temperature highs will climb into the lower 20s C (lower 70s F) across England and the interior of Wales.

The isolated showers will keep temperatures cooler, but closer to average across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The return of drier weather comes after heavy rainfall moved across parts of Britain last week. Many locations across southern England received in excess of 25 mm (an inch) of rain.

Locations, such as Aberdeen and Edinburgh, largely spared by the midweek rain, are still lingering in near-drought conditions. Both cities have seen less than 30 percent of their normal rainfall so far this month.

While both cities could see brief showers early this week, no significant rainfall is expected.

High pressure will hold across the United Kingdom through the middle of the week, during which time, largely dry weather may continue.
